For some of you, it might be the first time you know this thing exists, or you have known it already and being more curious about it. It’s the thing Gen Z should have and practice in their life. First of all, Gen Z is the generation born after Gen Y and it’s deemed as the generation where they are always connected to the sophisticated technology and internet.

Moreover, Internet and technology are now deemed as the tools where it can rebuild human’s characteristic and personality, specifically Gen Z who has immensely addictive behavior over it. Of course the usage and addiction over internet, mainly Social Media, has come to some problems. One problem that Gen Z concerns the most is mental health. This even becomes worse as COVID-19 hit in 2020. People have to WFH and count on virtual activities which then the increase of internet usage happens. They often feel stressed out, anxieties, lonely, have deluded and uncontrollable minds such as suicidal thought, and so forth. Well, those aren’t only caused by the internet usage, but internet or social media is just one of the factors.

Now, what is mindfulness? According to the Oxford Languages definition, mindfulness is a phase where mental state is achieved by focusing one’s awareness while calmly acknowledging one’s thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. In other words, it is about our awareness concerning what we’re doing, thinking, and where we are in a very calm and fine way without distraction or judgement.

Mental health issues that Gen Z mostly concern can be handled by doing the practice of mindfulness. Mindfulness practice is the way how meditation works. Furthermore, there are three qualities in mindfulness. It’s the way we pay attention to what’s happening in our surroundings, the attitude which is philanthropic and non judgmental, the last is to cultivate awareness. However, some people might belittle and think that mindfulness is less significant. Well, as a matter of fact, it is indeed simple, yet extremely essential in order to succeed handling and balancing our mental state for a better life. Superficially, it seems like humans purposes are trivial, only pursuing happiness and joyfulness in life. Whereas, having peaceful mind, body, and soul are everyone’s dreams which then it can lead us to everlasting grateful and delightful life.

Later on, how to cultivate mindfulness? There are some easy and basic ways to do it every day in our life. The first is yoga. We neither do acrobatic yoga nor do yoga in advanced level. Keep in mind that it’s to help us to focus, breathe, and learn how to balance our body by making certain movements. There are so many friendly beginners yoga on YouTube.

Next is meditate, this seems easy for people to do but it’s actually not. The challenge is how we maintain extreme focus in order to control our sense of mind and hearings so that we can achieve inner peace.

The third one is write down some gratitude things. Having gratitude feelings can help us acquire warmhearted phase and if we do it routinely, gratitude will gradually be in our souls.

The forth thing we need to do is listening to peaceful sounds or music. Listening to these sounds will make us learn how to do mindful listening. In addition, it helps us to make our body relax and soothe our mind.
